Quinte Chapter AGM: Dendrochronology 101, with Special Guest Carolyn Bonta

On Saturday, June 8, 2024 we will celebrate the love we share for our forests, learn about the importance of tree rings in natural resource management and West coast forestry adventures.

We hope to see you there! The doors will open at 9:00 a.m.

We are fortunate to be joined by special guest Carolyn Bonta. Carolyn is a conservation biologist and woodlot owner in Frontenac County, and trees are a focal part of her research, personal, and professional life. Carolyn has prepared a primer to dendrochronology – the analysis of tree rings- from a humorous, layman's perspective.

As an opportunity to learn more about our fellow Quinte members, we will also hear from Quinte chapter board member and forestry technician, Katelyn Murphy. Her perspective as a young woman involved in many aspects of forest management is unique and insightful.

The morning presentations will be followed by a brief AGM, and again this year, a hot homemade Amish meal prepared by the Miller family of Ivanhoe.

After lunch, we'll take a drive to Madoc Township, to see firsthand the cleanup effort from a tornado in July of 2022. The tornado cut a line of devastation through 200 woodlot properties from Marmora through Tweed. This farm, owned by the Reitav family, was one of the worst-hit. After advocacy by the Ontario Woodlot Association, the Province of Ontario provided funds for a cleanup. Quinte member, Shane Mumby, who lives on the family farm with his family, will lead a tour to show us the damage to the forest and also the logging work done this year to clean up the mess.

We’ll try to carpool from Ivanhoe to Madoc Township, to travel more efficiently and reduce need for parking spaces.
