Waterloo-Wellington: Field Trip and Annual Meeting

The Waterloo-Wellington Chapter will be having a fall outing to a couple of properties in the Erin/Arkell area (Arkell) is SE a bit from Guelph. At 2 members properties Steve Schafer’s on the west side of Erin, and the Bienzle property south of Arkell.

We will meet at 9:30 at the Schafer property and tour around there for a couple hours.

Shafer property had plantation thinnings in 2017 in an impressive white pine and some other not quite as impressive stands.  Stops include the plantation tion thinning, a subsequent Scott’s pine girdling/cherry release, buckthorn control and other highlights.

We will then go to the Bienzle property for lunch and a short business meeting before touring the  property

Albrecht Bienzle was a long-time member of our chapter and religiously attended our events. He tended to be pretty quite and didn’t dominate the discussions. I’ll refresh my details of his history with the chapter; but he moved up here in 2001, and passed away in 2022.  He diligently managed his property, has an outdoor wood-heating system and it will be a treat to tour his property and see his forestry legacy. Dorothee Bienzle is hosting the tour for us before the property is sold.
